Attention Local Writers

The Blackheath Theatre Company wants to encourage a range of genres for next year’s short play season.

We welcome original scripts that can embrace, for instance, the comical, tragical, pastoral, absurd, surreal, horror, natural, super-natural, domestic, epic or poetic. A smorgasbord of options to tease, enthuse and inspire the writing talent we have seen that exists in our community.

To make the season practical, compelling and exciting we are applying a range of criteria to help guide writers.

  • Plays should be between 10–30 mins. Please check the running time of your plays before submitting.
  • Consider minimal cast numbers, maximum 4 and limited props.
  • One scene/location is preferable particularly for a shorter 10–15 min play/sketch.
  • We will be using a rear projection for our back screen so think about an image or images that might work to enhance your play and help to limit set requirements.
  • Limit of 2 plays per author.

Please submit plays by the end of February 2027 to carol1542020@gmail.com.

Short Play Writers’ Workshop

This year we will be holding a Short Play Writers’ Workshop on 26 September, 10am to 12.30pm, at Bates Hall, 41 Gardner Cres, Blackheath.

The workshop is designed to help you write compelling plays suitable for stage performance.

It will focus primarily on story creation. That is, we want to write engaging characters, whose journey throughout the story will provide the structure of the play. Additionally, we will discuss how theme, genre and dialogue are an interweaving glue to your narrative, and how the short play, 10 to 15 minutes, differs from the 30 minute one. When you register to attend, you will be invited to provide a question or two, in dot format, on what element you struggle with most so that each of you gain some knowledge pertinent to you.

Following the presentation, you will be given an opportunity to workshop your play with one of our experienced members.

There is also an opportunity for a follow up session on 10th October (details TBC).

Cost: $25 or $20 for Members. Payments can be made on the day cash or card.

Bookings through Carol Williams — carol1542020@gmail.com.
